Eligibility

  • Open to students in grades 11th & 12th only and that live on the South Shore of Boston.

  • Open to all mediums. All painting and drawing, media, sculpture, graphics, photography, ceramic, textiles, wood or metal work, and mixed media. *Works should generally not exceed 72 inches in any dimension or weigh more than 150 pounds. Works must be framed or otherwise ready for hanging/installation. Artists proposing to submit work requiring specialized installation should consult with staff before the entry deadline.

  • No pieces may have been shown or displayed previously at the James.

  • All works must be current and original, having been created within the last two years.

  • Artists or an assigned representative must submit works in person.

  • Work submitted may be available for sale, but is not required.

  • Large 2D pieces normally framed in glass that exceeds 48 inches in either direction must be framed using an acrylic glazing (such as Plexiglas) only. No clamped glass, cardboard, paste on or saw tooth hangers.

  • Due to safety concerns, any work found to not be suitably framed may be rejected from the exhibit with no refund of entry fee.
    * Due to space constrictions, all 2D pieces must not exceed 48” x 72” and 3D pieces not to exceed 36” x 60” *Special exceptions may be requested and made by email to Art Gallery Director, William Houser at: bill.houser@jameslibrary.org

Submission Fees

$5.00 per entry or 3 for $12.00 Limit 6 entries per artist
*All fees are non-refundable

Juror

Nancy Colella

Nancy is an award-winning artist and art instructor working full time on the South Shore of Boston. She has a degree in Secondary Art Education and has juried art shows for all ages, for many years.
Nancy earned a BA in Fine Art from Muskingum University, then studied painting at the Aegean School of Fine Arts in Paros, Greece, and at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico. After a successful career in the hospitality business and while raising two children, she resumed her studies at Mass College of Art.

Nancy is currently a member of the National Association of Women Artists and a Copley Master of the Copley Society of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. She is currently a faculty member at the North River Arts Society in Marshfield, Massachusetts, and teaches numerous workshops throughout New England.
She is honored to participate in this valuable and exciting opportunity for future young artists.

Important Dates

  • January 24–26    Drop off: Friday 1/24/20 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Saturday 1/25/20 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, Sunday 1/26/20 11:00 am to 1:00 pm *No early drop offs

  • January 27    Jury selection

  • January 27    List of accepted works will be posted on The James Library & Center for the Arts’ website after 8pm.

  • January 28–31    Pickup of all unaccepted work. Pick up during normal business hours.

  • January 31    Opening night reception 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Free; all are welcome.

  • February 27    End of exhibit

  • March 3–7    Pickup of artwork not sold. Pick up during normal business hours.
    *Artists will be charged a $5.00 fee per day for any work not picked up by March 12, 2020.

Rules/Disclaimer/Legal

  • The James Library & Center for the Arts will use care in the handling of all work, but is in no way responsible for any damage that may occur in moving or hanging art work as well as any loss or theft of artwork. Artists should obtain any necessary insurance.

  • The James Library & Center for the Arts reserves the right to reject any work which cannot be displayed in a safe and secure manner (including poorly framed or wired work).

  • Any works accepted into the exhibition may be used for any marketing activities to advertise and promote this exhibit and future exhibits (artist credits to be given).

  • I understand that the James Library & Center for the Arts requests a 20% donation/commission for any pieces sold during the run of the exhibit and a 10% donation/commission for any pieces that sell within 60 days after, as a result of being in this exhibition.
