Ira Braus is Emeritus Professor of Music History at the Hartt School of Music, Dance, and Theater in West Hartford, CT. Active now as performer and publishing scholar, he holds a Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard and a Wulsin Fellowship in chamber music from Tanglewood Music Center. He studied piano with Gilbert Kalish and Jack Radunsky, chamber music with Bernard Greenhouse, Samuel Baron, and Luise Vosgerchian.

In 2007, Centaur Records released his CD of Brahms’s late piano works played on a period instrument housed at the E.M. Frederick Collection of Historic Pianos, on whose concert series he has often played. Mr. Braus has appeared also as chamber music partner on the Gardner Museum Concerts, as pianist for the Boston Repertory Ballet Orchestra, and as solo performer on Harvard’s Fromm Concerts for Contemporary Music.

A respected vocal accompanist, Mr. Braus was rehearsal pianist for the Glimmerglass Opera Company during its premiere season and went on to collaborate in Lieder recitals with such singers as D’Anna Fortunato (New England Conservatory), Jeanine Hawley (New York City Opera), and Jennifer Nelson (Boston Lyric Opera). Braus is internationally known as a chamber music coach and gave an online master class last year for student instrumentalists at University of The Arts in Yunnan, China.

In 2012, he coached students at McGill University, while working as a visiting scholar there. His essays in music history and analysis have been published in 19th Century Music, Journal of Music Theory, Music Perception, Brahms Studies, Early Keyboard Studies Newsletter, Clavier, and Coda Magazine.
