Juror Statement

I would like to sincerely thank Bill Houser and everyone at the James Library & Center for the Arts for

asking me to be the juror for the 2023 Spring Juried Exhibition. It was my honor to select the award

winners for this exhibition. I was truly awed and inspired by the incredibly diverse works from all of the

contributing artists. Congratulations to those who were accepted into the show this season.

Congratulations go to the award winners as these were truly exceptional works.

The high caliber of submissions for this show made my job enjoyable, but also quite difficult. From the

221 entries, I was to select no more than 50 pieces for the show (roughly 25% of the total entries). If

the gallery could accommodate additional works, I would have chosen more. In the end, the exhibition

selected represents a diverse display of works in a variety of mediums, featuring an array of styles and

techniques. For me, it was important that the subject matter was interesting, well-drawn, and well-

executed.

In choosing the works, I attempted to put my likes and dislikes aside. In doing so, I feel the exhibition

has more of a chance to show strength in its diversity. I made a point of judging each work by the

merits of its media, style, or concept. I aimed to select pieces that also exhibit a wide range of

successful artistic choices: subject matter, technique, palette, presentation, etc. I feel it shouldn’t

matter what type of art a juror personally prefers, they should be able to objectively discern and

appreciate quality work in any form, and select accordingly. I was looking for something which was well

executed but also has an edge, a charm, a spark to it, some kind of quirk.

There were so many exceptional works, but so few awards to give out. Those of you who did not win

this time, please know that there are dozens of pieces deserving of recognition. All of the works are

great, and I’m inspired and humbled by your creativity and talent.

I want to encourage everyone who creates art to try again for the next show, whether you ended up in

this exhibit or not. Keep trying. Keep painting. Keep sculpting. Keep creating. Do your thing, whether

you find it to be accepted quickly or not. Keep striving to hone your craft, find your voice, and find

ways to share that with others.

All the best,

Ruthie Holland Tredwell
